well apparently i really missed the boat on this one. i recently found a copy of this in an old record store and as i'm typically wary of live recordings i put it on the turntable at the store to give it a listen and was completely floored. i've been a sam cooke fan for years, and have known most of these songs since i was a child listening to oldies radio in my parents car, but have just been wearing out the same "best of" cassette and anthology collection on my ipod for years. anyways, i thought i had stumbled across a real jewel until further research when i learned that it is already regarded as one of the best live recorded albums and top soul records ever cut. and rightly so, the energy on this record is insane. cooke's charisma reaches from beyond the grave and out of the speakers to transport you to what is, judging by the sound of the audience, one hell of a swingin' party.
this past fall i had the pleasure the pleasure of seeing a really nice 4 man production about the life of sam cooke performed by an acting troupe somewhat local to my area. you can find out more about that here: "Sam Cooke: Where You Been Baby?"
